RACHEL LABASTIE – NUIT BLANCHE AT SHOAH MEMORIAL

off-site

Rachel Labstie has been invited by the Shoah Memorial in Paris to create her performance “Unstable” for the Nuit blanche 2024.

“Installed at the back of the art center, Djelem, Djelem, a large wicker wheel, turns on itself. On the floor, slabs of dry clay host a performance during which the artist, walking and breaking the dry earth beneath his feet, will sing the Gypsy hymn “Djelem, Djelem”, for which the sculpture is named. This ritual harks back to the origins of the artist, whose maternal grandmother belonged to the nomadic Jenisch community, mainly made up of basket-makers. “This slowly turning wicker wheel also speaks of a lineage, of a family wandering that has lasted for several generations. They also evoke the history of this material,” explains the artist. ”
